"The Challenges and Opportunities in Different Retail Outlets" Wine has become one of the fastest growing product categories in supermarkets with convenience stores, drugstores, mass merchandisers and warehouse clubs offering tremendous possibilities to expand the consumer base.This speaker's extensive experience with retailers and associations such as Albertson's, Kroger, Safeway, American Wholesale Marketers Association, Food Marketing Institute and National Association of Convenience Stores is expected to help the industry more clearly define the challenges and opportunities in this fast-moving retail world.

"President's Welcome" ~ Year 2001 Merit Award Presentation to Frederick L. Jensen

President?s Welcome ~ Jane Robichaud, ASEV President Merit Award presented to Mr. Frederick L. Jensen accepted by 2000 recipient Arthur J. Caputi, formerly of E. & J. Gallo Winery. ASEV Past President Larry Bettiga of the University of California Cooperative Extension, Monterey County will provide an overview of Mr. Jensen's career as he not able to attend. Presented annually to an individual who has significantly contributed in an outstanding distinguished manner to the progress and advancement of enology and viticulture or the Society itself. The Merit Award acknowledges excellence in the field of education, technology, research, management, public relations or any discipline related to enology and viticulture. During a distinguished career with the University of California, Mr. Jensen was instrumental in shaping the future of California viticulture. As both a farm advisor and viticulture specialist, he worked to develop commercial products such as plant growth regulators and to obtain commercial registration for some of the key chemicals used in viticulture. Jensen?s applied research programs in grape production, including work on disease control, cultivar selection and vine spacing, are well-known for their impact on California?s grape industry. The results of his research programs have been shared with grape growers and others in the industry through the development and organization of statewide viticulture short courses and meetings, including the San Joaquin Valley Grape Symposium, the Kearney Agricultural Center Grape Day and UC Extension short courses on wine grape and table grape production. He has long been recognized as an authority on table grape production and celebrated as a pioneer in grape integrated pest management. In honoring Frederick Jensen with the 2001 Merit Award, the ASEV will pay tribute to his work and applaud his many achievements.
